An equestrian athlete from Loretto has added another trophy to her shelf.
Mackenzie Wray, 20, and the Canadian youth team rode their way to gold at the United States Hunter Jumper Association North American Young Rider Show Jumping Team Championship held earlier this month in North Salem, N.Y.
Wray said it was such an incredible feeling to take part in this accomplishment, noting how Canada hasn't won gold in the division since 2003.
At the competition, Mackenzie rode Jewel LVP, a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare, finishing the first round with four faults, but clearing the second.
“I have a really amazing partnership with my horse,” she said. “She has a huge heart and gives 100 per cent every time she steps into the ring. We’ve both worked very hard this summer and to see that pay off at young riders is very gratifying.”
In 2017, Wray took home the 2017 Running Fox CET Medal National Final title and was named the champion in the Ontario Hunter Jumper Association Medal category. That year she also won the title of overall Equitation Rider for Ontario and was awarded the Matthew Mulligan Award.
In 2016, she won the Jump Canada Medal final at the Royal Horse Show in Toronto.
