Support for Post-Secondary Students

APRIL 22, 2020
• Announced on April 22nd at the Prime Minister’s press conference
• Approximately 9 billion dollars being proposed in several programs
• Many students do not technically qualify for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) as they did not lose a job due to COVID-19 as they were in school
• The restart of the economy may create difficulties for students to find summer jobs
• The Federal government is adding funding to create 76,000 new student jobs (in addition to those under the Canada Summer Jobs program) in sectors that need assistance or areas focused on COVID-19
• 291 million dollars in additional funding to extend scholarships, fellowships and grants to student researchers and graduate students
• Doubling the amount allocated to student grants for the 2020-2021 school year
CANADA EMERGENCY STUDENT BENEFIT (CESB)

Legislation is Required
• Existing post-secondary students, those starting in September or graduates in December 2019 are eligible for the program
• Starting May 1st they are eligible for $1,250 per month for May, June, July and August
• If supporting a dependant or if the applicant has a disability the amount increases to $1,750
• An applicant can make up to a $1,000 a month to be eligible
• The application will be through CRA My Account
• Likely will be a tie into CERB to avoid a double claim
CANADA STUDENT SERVICE GRANT (CESG)

• Students who volunteer in COVID-19 related volunteer work will be eligible for a grant of between $1,000 - $5,000 dependant upon the number of volunteer hours
